The Muros Antigos Alvarinho Vinho Verde DOC is a characterful white wine from the Monção e Melgaço subregion in the northwest of Portugal, crafted by Anselmo Mendes, one of the country’s most acclaimed winemakers. This single-varietal Alvarinho is made from hand-harvested grapes selected during the early days of the harvest to preserve their aromatic freshness.
The grapes come from steep, sun-drenched slopes with poor, granite-rich soils. After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo gentle whole-bunch pressing, followed by cold settling for 48 to 72 hours. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures between 14–18 °C to maintain the wine’s freshness and fruit character. The wine is then aged for three months on fine lees, adding extra structure and complexity.
On the nose, the Muros Antigos Alvarinho offers pronounced aromas of citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, with a hint of lime zest. On the palate, it is fresh, vibrant, and well-structured, with a clear mineral edge and a long, harmonious finish. This wine is a superb example of the quality and potential of the Alvarinho grape in the Vinho Verde region.
Muros Antigos Alvarinho is an excellent choice as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to light dishes such as seafood, grilled fish, salads, and poultry. Its freshness and complexity make it an ideal wine for summer and a perfect choice for wine lovers looking to explore the diversity and excellence of Portuguese wines.
